The year is 2013. You hear ‘Get Lucky’ by Daft Punk subtly playing in the other room as you pin your favorite tights and shorts combos on Pinterest. You realize you’re late to your sorority’s chapter meeting, so you throw on your chevron print shirt, skinny jeans & toms. Don’t forget your Lily Pulitzer day planner. Life is good.
If you were in college in the 2010’s waxing nostalgia, you’ll understand EXACTLY what i’m talking about – the hold that Pinterest had on me when it first launched truly baffled my friends, family & colleagues. I could spend hours ‘manifesting’ (before it was cool) my future house, home & boyfriends. Yes, I had an entire board just for my ‘boyfriends’ or men I thought were attractive.
Today, Pinterest serves as a great repository for storing inspiration for all aspects of life. Yet, I found myself really struggling to find those inspirational photos amidst the bulk of pins and broadly named boards on my profile. My 30 year old self was cringing at some of the photos I was finding, so I thought it was time for a refresh.
Here are a few ways to organize your Pinterest boards so you can easily plan a wedding, furnish a home, & cook a noteworthy weeknight dinner (Jeeze, I’m old).
Bulk Delete Items
My Pinterest was crawling with old pins that definitely needed to be cleaned out. Here is how to bulk delete items in your boards for a fresh start:
Select or Reorder Pins
- Click ‘Select or Reorder Pins’ – this will take you to a bulk list of your pins.
- Click all the pins you wish to delete (it should automatically let you select multiple, no need to hit ‘shift’)
- On the bottom of the screen, click the ‘Trash Can’ icon
- Click ‘Delete’
Organize Boards With The Click Of a Button
Pinterest has been updating features and I was CLEARLY not paying attention. If you go into any board you have already created, you can organize your pins into smaller category sections automatically.
Here is how:
- Go to Pinterest Profile
- Click the board you wish to organize
- Under the board name (next to ‘board ideas’) click ‘Organize’
- You have two options for your next step:
Select or Reorder Pins
- Click ‘Select or Reorder Pins’ – this will take you to a bulk list of your pins.
- Click all the pins you wish to include in your new category section (it should automatically let you select multiple, no need to hit ‘shift’)
- On the bottom of the screen, click ‘Create Section’
- Name your section
- Click ‘Add’
Once this is finished, it should take you to your Pinterest board with the new section added on top. Examples of sections I created with the “Wardrobe” category are:
- Julia Berolzheimer & Carly Riordan (I gravitate toward their styles the most, so I created sections titled with their names)
- Winter/Fall Outfits (interchangeable in California)
Group Pins into Sections
- Select the automatically created section you’d like to add (for example, mine had auto generated shoes & sweatshirts)
- Select/Deselect the pins you would like to include//not include in the section
- Edit the name of the section if you’d like
- Click “Add Section”
You can also click “Add Section” to customize whatever you’d like. Also note that doing the group pins will not automatically add every pin you want to that section, so if you REALLY want to be thorough, i’d go back through your pins in the ‘Select or Reorder Pins’ interface and make sure you have every item you wish to add.
Create Highly Specific Categories
The most pain-staking issue I faced when revamping my Pinterest profile was my boards were incredibly broad. My board “Home” was an absolute dumpster fire of thousands upon thousands of pins. My advice: create boards that you constantly refer back to.
Boards I newly created specifically within the “home” category were:
- Entertaining (great for adding charcuterie board inspiration, hostess gifts, & table settings)
- Seasonal (So much easier to find Christmas/Fall decor photos & wrapping paper inspiration)
- Organizing (Created one for Spruced that I consolidated with existing pins)
Other examples of new boards created:
- Self-Care
- Throwbacks (if you like to look back on how horrendous your pins were, it’s fun to group them together!)
- Books
And Just for good measure….some old pins.
Tell me you went to college from 2011-2014 without telling me you went to college from 2011-2014…
